Jim Cashell

Jim is a Butte native who holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Administration degrees from Montana State University.
Jim's law enforcement career began in 1974 as a student intern with the Silver Bow County Juvenile Probation Office. Following that internship Jim worked as a dispatcher for the Montana Highway Patrol in the Butte office.

In May 1975 he worked as a dispatcher/jailer with the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office. Three months later Jim was made a deputy sheriff. He has worked in most of the assignments at the sheriff's office including civil process, warrants, patrol and detectives. Jim was promoted to sergeant and assigned as the administrator of the Gallatin County Detention Center in November 1991. Following promotions to lieutenant and captain while at the detention center, Jim was appointed undersheriff in July 1999.

Jim was appointed sheriff of Gallatin County in 2001, elected in 2002, and re-elected in 2006. Jim has served on the board of the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (MSPOA) since 1986. He has served as President of MSPOA in 1997 and in 2005. Jim and his wife Diane have three children and two grandchildren with a third on the way.
