Laura was born in Missoula and grew up mostly in Havre before attending Montana State University in Bozeman, where she studied English Literature. She left Montana to work and lived in Washington DC, where she was a nanny. She earned a degree in Phoenix in Travel Management worked for Alaska Airlines in Seattle before returning home to Montana and settling in Townsend with her husband, Brian Obert. There they built a business selling Laura’s acrylic paintings and refurbishing and selling antique furniture.
Laura was elected to serve as a Broadwater County Commissioner in 2008 and re-elected in 2014. She has served on the Montana Board of Crime Control since 2010. Laura chairs the Montana Association of Counties Justice and Public Safety Committee and is actively involved with a variety of county issues with fellow commissioners throughout Montana. She is an active community member serving as president of the Townsend Rotary Club, charter member and past president of the Soroptimist Club in Townsend, organizer of Townsend Rotary Fall Fest and an active member of Broadwater County Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce. Laura also teaches Summer Art Camp, Career Education and the After School Art Program in the Townsend Schools.
